Frequently Asked Questions
Do you have questions? We are here to answer them!
Master's degree PLUS
How does a Master's PLUS program work and what does it replace in the regular curriculum?
A master's degree supplemented by a master's module becomes a Master's Degree Plus. In the cross-study and cross-disciplinary modules, master's students acquire key competencies for the professional and working world and personal development. More information about the Master's Program Plus can be found here.
The Master's Program Plus can not only be taken as a supplement to the Master's Program, but can also be credited with the two extension modules (cf. Curriculum) if desired.
Recognitions
Who can I contact if I want to have a lecture recognized?
Please contact the URBI Dean's Office directly: urbi(at)uni-graz.at
How do I apply for recognition?
Via Uni Graz Online "My recognitions" you can apply for recognition. To do this, click on Actions and New Recognition. Here you have to fill in which type of recognition it is. After that click on Selection Position and then on Action New Position. Here you can select the different courses and assign them to the respective module. After that, please save the recognition form in PDF and send it to the URBI Dean's Office by email, because the recognition request still needs to be confirmed.
Interdisciplinary internship
What are the requirements for registering for an IP?
For an application theModule A and Submodule B.5 must be completed.
Mandatory practice
What do I need to submit a mandatory internship?
Intotal of 150 hours (6 ECTS, equivalent to approx. 1 month) must be completed. Full-time employment is not required. Part-time employment will be credited equivalently.
The following documents must be submitted to the Global Studies Coordination Office or sent by e-mail before the start of the internship:
- the completed and complete original application for approval
- a 1-2 page description of activities, signed by the prospective employer. It should be clear in which way you will be able to apply and test the knowledge you have learned in your studies and what the content-related relation between your study focus and the internship activity is.
- A letter of motivation signed by the applicant.
Internships cannot be approved retrospectively!!!
To whom should I address the letter of motivation?
The letter of motivation serves to make clear to us that you have thought about the internship and its benefit for your later professional life. It is therefore addressed to us (contact person: Klaudia Kramer), and contains a justification for your choice of internship, your internship position and your personal motivation for this position. The motivation letter to us should not be the same cover letter as for the internship employer.
What do I have to do after successfully completing compulsory practice?
Your internship provider will confirm that you have successfully completed the mandatory internship. The last two pages of the application form are intended for this purpose. Page three is in German and the last page offers the possibility to confirm the completed practice also in English, if you have completed your compulsory practice abroad, for example. In any case, it is sufficient if your internship provider fills out one of the two pages. Please send the confirmation back to the Global Studies Coordination Office so that we can enter the completed practice in UGO.
Semester abroad
Is it possible to do a semester abroad?
Yes, you can also do a semester abroad in the Master Global Studies, and we even strongly recommend it! The Office of International Relations provides support in this regard. It is only important that the university abroad offers a sufficient number of courses for the field of study in Graz.
Note: Applications are usually made 1 year or more in advance. So keep an eye on the application deadlines when planning.
Where can I apply for a semester abroad?
The Office of International Relations (BIB) supports you in planning a stay abroad. The application is done via Mobility-Online. Therefore, please contact the BIB directly. You can find more information about planning here.
Master thesis
In which area can I complete my master's thesis?
The topic of the master's thesis must be taken from one of the submodules C.1 in which at least 12 ECTS have been completed or, in the case of an interdisciplinary thesis, must be meaningfully related to it. The topic of the master's thesis cannot be taken from a cross-faculty master's module. An explicit connection of the master thesis topic to a specific course is not required.
In the selected submodule in which the master's thesis is written, suitable courses from C.2.1 and C2.2 must also be completed.
How to find a professor to supervise the master thesis?
The following applies to the choice of the supervisor: The supervisor must be assigned to the chosen disciplinary specialization in which the Master's thesis is written and must usually be a habilitated professor. Information about this can be found in the study regulations of the statutes § 26 (3) and (4). Further information can be found on the homepage of the URBI Dean's Office.
Where do I have to submit the topic of my master thesis?
In which language must the master thesis be written?
The language is to be discussed with the supervisor. In principle, the decision is between German and English.
Where can I register for the master thesis defense?
After the positive assessment of the master thesis, the defense of the thesis takes place in the form of an oral examination worth 1 ECTS. This is NOT a Master's examination or a final examination before an examination board. Therefore, the examination can also take place before all required ECTS have been completed. The examiner is the supervisor of the master thesis. There is no second examiner. However, the presence of an examiner with a valid scientific employment at the University of Graz is mandatory (neither doctorate nor habilitation are required). The candidate organizes the subject examination in consultation with the supervisor (date, place - online is also possible at any time without permission, protocolist). The subject of the defense is (a) 15 minutes presentation of the work and (b) 10 minutes discussion of the work.
